Input From Nonprofits Guide Public Comments on Grant Streamlining

OMB Watch is working to inform nonprofits about federal agency proposals to streamline the grants process, and get input from state and local groups heard by the agencies. As part of this project, the National Council of Nonprofit Associations and OMB Watch co-sponsored focus groups of state and local nonprofits that reviewed recent Federal Register announcements in detail. The focus groups represented a variety of programs and came from diverse areas of the country.

Study on Effectiveness of Faith-Based Services Shows Little Difference

Ever since President Bush announced his faith-based initiative in January 2001, the administration has claimed faith-based programs are more effective than secular programs, but most of the evidence has been anecdotal. That has now changed, with publication of a study by Indiana University and Purdue University comparing results of faith-based and secular job training programs.

Summary of House Charitable Giving Bill and Comparison with CARE Act

The Charitable Giving Act was introduced in the House of Representatives on May 8th by Rep. Roy Blunt (R-MO) and Rep. Harold Ford, Jr. (D-TN). It has been assigned the same number (H.R. 7) as the Faith-Based and Community Initiatives Act passed by the House in 2001, but does not contain any charitable choice provisions. Opposite Sides of Faith-Based Debate Publish Consensus Statement

While Congress has been unable to agree on what standards should apply to religious organizations that receive government funding for social services programs, the Working Group on Human Needs and Faith-Based and Community Initiatives, composed of experts with diverse views, has published Harnessing Civic and Faith-Based Power to Fight Poverty, a statement of 38 specific consensus recommendations. The top priority is increased government funding for social services programs. The project is sponsored by the Roundtable on Religion and Social Welfare Policy.
