Coalition Opposes Bill to Regulate Independent 527 Groups

A new coalition has formed to oppose passage of the 527 Reform Act of 2005 (S. 271 and H.R. 513). The Coalition to Protect Independent Political Speech sent a letter to Congress signed by more than 100 nonprofits urging rejection of the bill, noting, “These organizations have contributed to the revitalization of American democracy, helping bring millions of people back to the process of governing the country by bringing them back to the polls.” The Senate Rules Committee has scheduled a hearing for March 8.

FEC Looking at Internet Advocacy

Bradley Smith says that the freewheeling days of political blogging and online punditry are over. In just a few months, he warns, bloggers and news organizations could risk the wrath of the federal government if they improperly link to a campaign's Web site. We Lost On WIA Yesterday...

First of all, thank you to anyone who sent out a letter or made a phone call to their Representative. Staffers told our coalition members that the phone calls and letters really did make a difference. HR 27 passed yesterday, 224 to 200. The Scott Amendment to restore civil rights protections failed, 186 Aye -- 239 No. ' I'm really very proud of the work our coalition did. We had great leadership from groups like Americans United and ACLU. Now, on to the Senate!

Advocating a bold reversal of constitutional law, Rep. Tom DeLay says that the Constitution does not mandate a seperatation of church and state. From Congress Daily AM: House Majority Leader DeLay said Tuesday there is no constitutional guarantee of separation of church and state as the Supreme Court prepared to take up a case challenging the display of the Ten Commandments on the Texas Capitol grounds, the Associated Press reported.

The Panel on the Nonprofit Sector Releases Interim Report To

Today I attended a press conference at the Dirksen Building to announce the release of Independent Sector's Panel on the Nonprofit Sector Interim Report. The Interim Report contains 21 recommendations to the Senate Finance Committee on measures to regulate the nonprofit sector. The recommendations are the product of the Panel's 5 Working Groups and, supposedly, public recommendations on the first draft. The recommendations are based largely in reponse to the Senate Finance Cmte's discussion draft.

Bush Pushes Faith Based Initiative

President George W. Bush reassured a gathering of religious and civic leaders this morning (3/1/05) that he is committed to pursuing his Faith-Based and Community Initiative to expand the role of religious organizations in the delivery of government-funded social services. "Hopefully you will be reassured that this initiative is one that has a lot of impetus, and be reassured that we want to help change America," President Bush said to some 250 guests attending the White House Faith-Based and Community Initiatives Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C.
