EPA Receives Another Perchlorate Data Quality Challenge

The Perchlorate Study Group (PSG) submitted a data quality request for correction to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) December 3, 2003, challenging a number of documents used to assess implications of perchlorate ingestion. This is the third challenge EPA received on perchlorate. Perchlorate is a chemical found in rocket fuel and has contaminated drinking water near Department of Defense (DoD) sites in at least 22 states. Request for Reconsideration

Trade Organization Challenges Information Relating to Antibiotic Use in Poultry

A data quality petition filed December 6, 2002 by the Animal Health Institute (AHI) challenged information the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) disseminates regarding fluoroquinolones. Background Fluoroquinolones are a class of antibiotics used on humans, pets, and more recently poultry. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) opposed the use of fluoroquinolone in poultry, but the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved two drugs -- one developed by Abbott Laboratories (approved in 1995) and another by the Bayer Corporation (approved in 1996).

World Health Organization Report Faces Data Quality Challenge

The Center for Regulatory Effectiveness (CRE) filed a request for correction Sept. 8 to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) under the agencies' data quality guidelines. The petition challenges the World Health Organization (WHO) Technical Report 916 called Diet, Nutrition and the Prevention of Chronic Diseases. USDA and HHS plan to base part of their 2005 Dietary Guidelines on the report.

CRE Challenges Toxic Listing Under TRI

The Center for Regulatory Effectiveness (CRE) submitted its second request for correction to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the agency’s data quality guidelines. The challenge appeared to be filed by CRE on behalf of the American Chemistry Council (ACC) who’s Phthalate Esters Panel nominally co-sponsored this request. This Oct. 16 petition challenges the objectivity and utility of the “Technical Review of Diisononyl Phthalate” and a rulemaking proposal that relies on the review.
