Scientists Speak Out Against the Bush Administration

Last week the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) released updated evidence that the Bush administration continues to manipulate and control science for political reasons. UCS has now collected the signatures of more than 4,000 scientists supporting a statement urging the Bush administration to discontinue these troubling practices, and to restore scientific integrity in federal policymaking. The prestigious list of scientists taking this unprecedented stand includes 48 Nobel laureates, 62 national medal of science recipients, and 127 members of the National Academy of Sciences.

OMB Watch Uncovers Flaws in OMB's Data Quality Report

The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) recently published a report to Congress that analyzes and summarizes federal agencies' first year of operations experience using the new information quality guidelines mandated under the Information Quality Act (IQA). Request for Correction The challenged statement is from CDC⦡mp;#8364;?s frequently asked questions page for community fluoridation, which reads -- "Extensive research conducted over the past 50 years has shown that fluoridation of public water supplies is a safe and effective way to reduce tooth decay for all community residents."

NIH Receives Data Quality Challenge on Chemical Information

The Chemical Products Corporation (CPC) submitted a data quality petition to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) within the Department of Health and Human Services November 15, 2002, challenging a draft technical report on the toxicology and carcinogenesis of Anthraquinone. CPC previously submitted a challenge to the Environmental Protection Agency regarding barium under the Data Quality Act. CPC manufactures anthraquinone for use by the paper industry as an intermediate chemical in the production of dyes and other organics. Request for Correction

The Department of Commerce U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) received a data quality request October 2, 2002 requesting correction of information associated with a specific patent (6,344,272). The petitioner asserts that while the patent was processing, the wrong set of claims where identified and disseminated with the patent on the USPTO website.

Data Quality Lawsuit Filed Against the Department of Education

The College Sports Council (CSC) contends a report issued by the Secretary’s Commission on Opportunity in Athletics violates the data quality guidelines, according to a lawsuit filed against the Department of Education. CSC claims that the report is statistically flawed and does not meet the requirement for pre-dissemination review. The lawsuit names Secretary of Education Roderick Paige and the Department of Education’s (ED) Chief Information Office William Leidinger as defendants in the case.
