The Associated Pressreported last night that when the Obama White House announces the federal deficit next Tuesday, the number will be about $262 billion less than officials predicted earlier this year – in part because the administration has provided less aid to Wall Street than originally expected.
After a couple of days of voting down Republican-offered amendments, the Senate finally agreed last night to end debate on a $410 omnibus spending bill. After the 62-35 vote, the Senate ended the FY 2009 appropriations process by a voice vote.
On Feb. 23, the House released details of a $410 billion omnibus spending bill. The bill would continue funding large portions of the federal government for the remainder of the fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30. The omnibus bill bundles appropriations for nine out of 12 spending bills set to expire on March 6. The Senate is expected to pick up the legislation the first week of March.
The president released his FY 2009 budget this morning. His $3 trillion request is a first, and it comes six years after another historical request - the first $2 trillion request.
