House and Senate Approve Budget Resolutions Before Skipping Town for Spring Break

Yesterday the House and Senate each approved their respective FY 2010 budget resolutions. Slogging through a seemingly endless stream of votes on amendments, the Senate approved (55-43) their spending plan (S Con Res 13) last night several hours after the House passed (233-196) its version (H Con Res 85).

Both chambers' would authorize about $3.6 trillion in spending, with more than $1 trillion in discretionary spending -- $1.21 trillion in the Senate's plan and $1.23 trillion in the House's. Both resolutions call for somewhat less discretionary spending than President Obama's requested $1.37 trillion.

Congress will leave town for a couple of weeks and hopefully will return to DC ready to hash out the resolutions' differences before May to beat the May 15 deadline, which is rarely kept.
