Revised SCHIP Legislation Passes House
by Adam Hughes*, 1/14/2009
The House of Representatives passed an amended SCHIP reauthorization bill today by a wide margin. The vote was 289 - 139. 40 Republicans joined with 249 Democrats to pass the legislation, which authorizes $32.3 billion over the next four-and-a-half years, ending in September 2013. The bill is fully funded through tax increases on tobacco products, including a 61 cent per-pack increase on cigarettes, and by closing a loophole for specialty hospitals owned by doctors.
