Advocacy and Core Support Funding Recommended
by Matt Carter, 5/13/2002
The National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy (NCRP) has released "The State of Philanthropy 2002," a collection of analyses on the current state of philanthropy as well as recommendations for grantmakers.
Key among the recommendations is encouragement for foundations to shift giving toward core operating support for nonprofit grantees. Currently, there is a heavy focus on grants for short-term projects which, according to the report, "hamper organizational effectiveness and hinder broader mission fulfillment." The report also advises grantmakers to fund advocacy for social change and not just social service programs that address the symptoms of social problems without addressing the cause.
Both of these recommendations seek to strengthen the long-term capacity of the nonprofit sector, as well as reverse current grantmaking trends. The full report can be purchased from NCRP, and the table of contents and introduction are available online as an Adobe Acrobat PDF file.
