Hensarling Bill That Exempts Internet Set To Come To Floor

A bill that would exempt Internet advertising and other online communications from federal limits on financing of campaign ads is set for a vote in the House of Representatives Nov. 2. H.R. 1606, the "Online Freedom of Speech Act" is sponsored by Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-TX) is the center of controversy. Campaign reformers argue that a broad exemption of the Internet from campaign finance limits opens a loophole allowing unlimited corporate and union funding of paid ads on the Web. Conversly, conservative and liberal Internet bloggers are calling for support of the Internet-exemption measure, saying it is need to protect online political discourse from unwarranted regulation.
