OIRA Meeting on Roof Crush Resistance
by Guest Blogger, 5/25/2005
OMB met with a roof crush consultant and Pauben, an auto-safety engineering group, on April 28, regarding NHTSA's roof crush rule. NHTSA is planning to revise its standard for roof crush resistance in the next year.
Public Citizen released documents in April showing that U.S.automakers misled the government and the public for years by claiming that the strength of vehicle roofs is unrelated to the serious injuries sustained when vehicles crash and roll over. According to the industry documents, Ford denied this link even though its Volvo subsidiary had conducted research demonstrating that strengthening car roofs and other improvements are the key to preventing injuries and saving lives in rollover crashes.
