Crawford to be director of FDA

Amidst controversy on lax drug approvals and a shortage of flu vaccines, Lester Crawford, acting director of FDA since last March, has been nominated by Bush to be director of the agency. Crawford will oversee an agency that has been criticized in recent months for a culture of intimidation and secrecy, where the recommendations of expert advisory committees are frequently ignored, science is suppressed or manipulated for the benefit of industry and harmful drugs have repeatedly been allowed to enter the market.
