Estate Tax Lobby Day

Americans for a Fair Estate Tax in partnership with United for a Fair Economy and the Fair Taxes for All coalition is working to organize people throughout the country to come to Washington DC on March 9-10 to speak out against permanent repeal of the estate tax.

Nonprofits have a special interest in the estate tax, since a full repeal would mean the removal of an important incentive to give to charity. The Brookings/Urban Tax Policy Center recently estimated that a repeal of the estate tax would lead to an estimated $10 billion annual reduction in charitable giving.

The opponents of the estate tax continue to use vast sums of money to pressure lawmakers to repeal the estate tax, which affects less than 2% of the population. We need to counter this pressure with our own voices. Please consider joining us at the March Lobby event.

SAVE THE DATE - MARCH 9-10, 2004 ESTATE TAX LOBBY DAYS in DC

United for a Fair Economy, Responsible Wealth and Americans for a Fair Estate Tax have learned that Senate Republicans are planning another vote this spring to permanently repeal the estate tax.

Please mark your calendar and plan to join Americans for a Fair Estate Tax, United for a Fair Economy and Responsible Wealth in Washington, DC on March 9-10, 2004 to let Congress know you oppose permanent repeal of the estate tax.

It is important that we get as many people to DC as possible, especially given the heavy lobbying being done by pro-repeal interests, including their annual "Death Tax Summit." Please let us know if you might be interested in attending by responding to lfarris@faireconomy.org or mlapham@responsiblewealth.org.

This event will include lobby training, lobby visits to Senators and Representatives, and a dinner featuring Bill Gates, Sr. as keynote speaker.

PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDAR NOW AND PLAN TO JOIN US MARCH 9-10!

In addition, please let us know if you plan to be in DC at any time this spring, and we can set up lobby visits for you.

___________ Americans for a Fair Estate Tax (AFET) is a broad-based non-partisan coalition of nonprofit groups, including civic, labor, social justice, faith-based, and environmental organizations, as well as organizations providing human services. AFET advocates that instead of repealing the tax on multi-million dollar estates, Congress should reform the estate tax to ensure that family farms and small businesses are not unfairly taxed while keeping 98 percent of taxpayers exempt and safeguarding Medicare, Social Security, education, charities and other key national priorities that would be threatened by a complete repeal. See http://www.fairestatetax.org for more information on the coalition and the estate tax.
