Celebrating 25 Years of Promoting Government Accountability and Citizen Participation
by Brian Gumm, 4/22/2008
2008 marks OMB Watch's 25th anniversary, celebrating a quarter century of pursuing a more open and accountable government that promotes fairness and equity. We are committed to a responsive and proactive government that protects people's health, safety, and well-being; safeguards the environment; honors the public's right to accurate, accessible information; values an engaged citizenry; and adequately invests in the common good.
OMB Watch was established in 1983 to lift the veil of secrecy shrouding the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB). While OMB's actions were having an enormous impact on agency operations and the pursuit of social justice, it remained largely behind the scenes — unaccountable and little understood by the public and public interest groups.
OMB Watch: The Early Years
The Original OMB Watchers: 25 Years Later
By explaining government processes and monitoring OMB, OMB Watch was instrumental in bringing sunshine to a powerful and secretive agency. As the years have progressed, tracking OMB activities has led to other concerns about the federal government's institutional responsiveness to public needs, including our current agenda addressing budget, taxation, and government performance; government transparency; effective health, safety, and environmental protections; and safeguarding nonprofit speech and advocacy rights.
Join us as we toast 25 years of watchdogging Washington, and help us successfully move into the next 25 years of seeking a government that is truly accountable to the American people.
