Update on MA Clean Elections Law
As previously reported in the Watcher the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ordered the State Legislature to either fund or repeal a law providing matching funds to candidates who collect a minimum number of donations between $5-$100 and agree to limit campaign spending. The law was passed as a ballot initiative in 1998 and has not been funded by the Legislature. On February 25, the Court awarded Gubernatorial candidate Warren Tolman over $800,000 and implemented a judiciary process for other qualifying candidates to petition the Court for money. Meanwhile, the Massachusetts legislature voted to sharply reduce the scope of the law, but acting Governor Jane Swift (R) has promised a veto.
