An OMB Watch report released this week highlights key gaps in government efforts to meet the public's right to know about environmental and human health threats. "A Citizen's Platform for the Environmental Right-To-Know" lays out fundamental right-to-know principles, key issues and a right-to-know action plan for EPA in 2001. Simply put, we simply know too little about threats to the environment and public health. At the same time, the public's "right to know" has helped cut toxic chemical releases almost in half. The public not only has a right to access timely, accurate information, but the public right to know – when combined with enforcing existing environmental laws – is an effective tool to protect the environment and human health. The Platform lays out fundamental principles underlying the public's right to know, outlines key obstacles to fulfilling the right-to-know promise, and lays out recommendations for EPA.
