50 Public Interest Groups Support Homeland Security Fix
by Sean Moulton, 3/13/2003
In an effort to support recent efforts led by Sens. Leahy (D-VT) and Levin (D-MI) to fix overly restrictive information provisions in the Homeland Security Act (HAS), 50 public interest groups ranging from librarians to lawyers and environmentalists to reporters signed a statement of support.
The groups oppose the vague FOIA exemption and restrictions on government use of information in the Critical Infrastructure Information Subtitle of the HAS. On March 12, Senators Leahy and Levin, along with Jeffords (I-VT), Lieberman (D-CT) and Byrd (D-WV) introduced the “Restore Freedom of Information Act” or “Restore FOIA” for short. The bill proposes to completely replace the Critical Infrastructure Information subtitle with bipartisan language developed last year during negotiations on homeland security. The Restore FOIA Act was introduced just a few days before the National Freedom of Information Day, March 16, which is James Madison’s birthday.
