CBO Reports $108 Billion Spent on Stimulus
by Sam Rosen-Amy, 11/3/2009
Updated below.
Today, the Congressional Budget Office, Congress' independent budgetary analysis arm, released a report on FY 2009 Recovery Act spending. Back in February, the CBO predicted that federal agencies, which are tasked with spending the stimulus funds, would spend $106 billion in FY 2009. Today's report confirms that approximate number. According to the CBO, agencies spent $108 billion (excluding tax provisions), within 1 percent of the original predicted value. Not too shabby.
The only problem is this number does not match the spending amounts shown on Recovery.gov. That site shows agencies have spent close to $120 billion in FY 2009, or about 13 percent off the CBO's prediction. We'll report back on the discrepancy as soon as possible.
[Update: Turns out the discrepancy is my mistake. The CBO estimate is for FY 2009, but the Recovery.gov data are through October, which is not in FY 2009. The added month explains the $12 billion difference.]
Check out the report for more information on how that money was spent, and why the number does not include tax provisions.
