Congress Moving in the Right Direction with Afghanistan Oversight
by Gary Therkildsen*, 6/16/2009
Congressional Quarterly (subscription required) reported this morning that the House passed by a voice vote yesterday a measure to speed the hiring of new investigators in Afghanistan.
According to the article:
The legislation would allow the office of the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) to set its own hiring requirements and bypass federal hiring practices, which are often lengthy....
A similar office overseeing reconstruction in Iraq has had special hiring authority since its inception. Its last quarterly report said it had conducted 135 audits and claimed a savings of more than $300 million.
Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), ranking member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, introduced the bill after an inspector general report on SIGAR found that the office had filled only eight of 34 inspector positions and had completed no audits.
Having already passed the Senate, the bill moves on to President Obama, who is expected to sign it.
