Catholics for a Free Choice has lodged a complaint with the IRS alleging that Catholic Answers, a 501(c)(3), had engaged in prohibited partisan electioneering activity. In reponse, Catholic Answers has now set up an appropriate tax exempt entity (a 501(c)(4)) to legally carry out the activities it wants to engage in. Job-Training Bill Passes Senate Without Discrimination Provision

Sen. Landrieu Proposes Estate Tax Compromise

BNA (subscription required) is reporting that Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA) has introduced an estate tax reform bill. Although not a full repeal and not as costly as Sen. Jon Kyl’s (R-AZ) compromise, it would still cost $245 billion over ten years. Sen. Landrieu’s bill calls for a $5 million per-spouse exemption with a rate of 35 percent that would increase for estates worth more than $10 million.

Sunset Commission Update

Here's another look at the negotiations in the House and the plans for getting a sunset commission package out quickly: Boehner met June 22 with Rep. Todd Tiahrt (R-KS) and Rep. Kevin Brady (R-TX) to craft a compromise between their bills that adopt different mechanisms for sunsetting agency programs. Congressional sources say the GOP goal is to introduce a compromise bill after the July 4 recess. “Negotiations are ongoing but at some point the leadership is going to step in and decide which way we’re going to go on this in July,” according to a Republican staffer.
