Bush's Veto Threats Amount to a Hill of Beans

The veto threats of FY 2008 spending bills are coming fast and furious from the White House. The third such threat of the week was issued yesterday:
  • H.R. 2641 —- The Energy and Water Development and Related Agencies Appropriations Act.

Alert: Redesigned Form 990 Released

The IRS released for comment and discussion proposed revisions to Form 990 and other supporting information. The IRS hopes to have the form ready for use for the 2008 filing year for returns filed in 2009. The redesign is based on three principles, "enhancing transparency, promoting tax compliance, and minimizing the burden on the filing organization." The comment period will run for 90 days, and comments are due no later than September 14, 2007.

Davenport v. Washington Education Association, A Forecast for WRTL?

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that states can require public employee labor unions to get consent from non-members before using their dues for political activities and lobbying. Justice Antonin Scalia said the law does not violate the union's First Amendment rights. Now, many are eager to use this ruling to make predictions for the outcome of the Wisconsin Right to Life (WRTL) case which will be decided by the end of the month. Senate Appropriations Releases its 302(b) Allocations

This afternoon, the Senate Appropriations Committee released the list of FY 2008 discretionary spending caps allocated to each of its subcommittees of jurisdiction, under Budget Act section 302(b). The House Appropriations announced its own 302(b) allocations on June 5.

Allegations of Terrorist Ties to Nonprofits Must Stop

Kay Guinane, Director of Nonprofit speech rights, had this blog appear in The Hill's Congress Blog. This posting highlights the letter that OMB Watch and other organizations sent to Treasury Secretary Paulson in response to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) report that claimed charities are a "significant source of alleged terrorist activities."
