The Center for Effective Government seeks a Director of Development, who will report directly to the   President and serve in the senior leadership team. The candidate should have at least 5 years of development experience and demonstrated career interest in social justice issues.  The Center’s offices are located in Washington, DC.

For more than 30 years, the Center for Effective Government has been a national leader for social justice and the public interest. Nationally known and impactful beyond its size, the Center strives for an open, effective government that invests in the common good, protects people and the environment, and advances the national priorities defined by an active, informed citizenry. We build broad-based coalitions to advance these values, create tools to encourage citizen participation in our government, work with policymakers to develop reform proposals, and publish research reports. This work is widely used by partners and allies, and it has been featured by MSNBC, CNN, C-SPAN, NPR, USA Today, the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Washington Post, prominent online outlets such as The Huffington Post, and a wide selection of regional, state, and local papers, radio outlets, and television stations.                                                     

Job Description

Reporting to and working closely with the President, the Director of Development will spearhead fundraising efforts with the goal of growing the budget and advance the organization institutionally. We are looking for a strategic, ambitious, and senior professional with a history of and orientation toward growing organizational revenue.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute an annual development plan with an initial focus on increasing foundation funding, and a plan for major individual donor cultivation;
  • Work closely with the President so as to maximize her personal cultivation of donors with major input into her travel schedule;
  • Serve as an important point of contact for donors – current and prospective;
  • Continually grow the prospect list;
  • Manage flow and deadlines of grant proposals and reports;
  • Develop and execute individual donor appeals;
  • Expertise in database and data analysis as it pertains to fundraising;
  • Ensure timely and accurate gift entry and generation of acknowledgement letters and other donor recognition;
  • Generate reports and analyses to the President and Board that support effective planning;
  • Explore possibility of staging fundraising events;
  • Support the Board; and
  • Manage interns and, funding permitting, junior development staff.

Qualifications

  • Development professional with at least 5 years of experience and a proven track record of increasing organizational revenue;
  • Enjoys personally asking for money in writing and in person;
  • Enjoys numerical job goals and achieving those goals;
  • Strategic thinker who, as a member of the senior leadership team, can help CEG advance institutionally;
  • Experienced manager of personnel;
  • Creates orderly and transparent systems to accomplish recurring tasks;
  • Expert knowledge of philanthropic and industry trends and issues;
  • Demonstrated experience with strategic planning and budgeting;
  • Fluent and fast writer under deadline;
  • Excellent verbal communication and sales skills;
  • Excellent donor database and computer skills
  • Collaborates effectively;
  • Career interest in social justice; and
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
