Emergency Unemployment Benefits Are Not Forgotten

As politicians have shifted their focus to a discussion of minimum wage this spring, addressing the December expiration of emergency unemployment benefits, retroactively, appeared increasingly difficult. However, the Senate now appears ready to raise the issue, again, nearly two months after the emergency benefits expired.

The number of Americans, who have been cut off from unemployment insurance due to congressional inaction, will swell to just under 2 million people as February draws to a close. Approximately 1.3 million Americans were abruptly cut off from the program on Dec. 28, 2013, and the number denied benefits will continue to grow without congressional action. More than $3 billion in unemployment checks has not been distributed to unemployed workers as a result of the program‘s expiration.

The cut in unemployment compensation will continue to exacerbate shortages at food banks, elevate mortgage delinquency rates, and inhibit the ability of job-seekers to continue their search, if no action is taken.

Payroll employment, the labor market participation rate, and long-term unemployment have still not returned to pre-recession levels, and robust job growth in the near term appears unlikely. For these reasons, efforts to extend emergency unemployment compensation have attracted bipartisan support, especially among conservatives in states still plagued with high unemployment. Nonetheless, only four Republican Senators supported moving forward with the proposal in a procedural vote in early February.

Extending emergency unemployment benefits is a vital piece of unfinished business for this Congress, and it is perhaps the only vehicle of its kind that could provide relief to job-seekers trying to make it in a tough market. An extension of the emergency unemployment compensation program (EUC) should continue to be pursed for the same reasons the minimum wage should be increased-- the economy is not working for the average American. We can, and should, help low-wage job workers, those working part-time for economic reasons, and unemployed job seekers.

For a breakdown of ongoing state-by-state impacts, the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities has produced a concise chart that extends through December 2014 here.

When President Bush was in office, five times, the EUC bill was passed, no strings attached any of those times, no amendments. Vote against the GOP.

SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE BONER FAX No. Fax: (202) 225-5117
Not to mention NOT extending unemployment benefits to millions, but also look at how truly FUCKED UP OBAMA CARE REALLY IS?!?!?!? So I CAN not pay for health insurance because I am unemployed, so there for do not have it. So your making me OWE you even more fucking money on my next years taxes JUST because I lost my job and have no money to pay for health insurance?!?!? To top it all off, for me to even GET the so called great fucking piece of shit Obama care, I would have to pay several hundred dollars a month!!!! Which I DONT HAVE, because I am unemployed!!! Now how the FUCK does that make any sense at all?!?!?! Please explain to me this new great system that we have in place now that actually doesn't benefit me in any way shape or form, and actually HURTS me and makes me owe even more money that I do not have because I have no job..... Great fucking plan you made president, great plan indeed you FUCKING MORON you. Basically his system only benefits the people who where NEVER working in the first place, and have never done anything and are dirt poor, so basically THOSE people actually make MORE money and have a better way of living then the HARD WORKING AMERICANS who worked their asses off and because of some unforeseen horrible thing they are no longer employed, when they have worked their whole life. I am only 28, Never once took a hand out from ANYONE ever in my life, lost my job on NO fault of my own, because I made to much money and they cut me, out sourcing my job over seas...... I have spent my 26 weeks of unemployment benefits, still have $5,400 in my unemployment account that is OWED to me, yet they are not paying me it at all because my 26 weeks are up!! Yet I clearly have a piece of paper saying how I still have money in my account owed to me.... I worked my ass off since I was 13 years old. not ONCE took a hand out until now. I just went on food stamps and would be homeless if I wasn't lucky enough to have a mother and father who still work and are helping me through this tough time. ANNND ohhh by the way.... I take care of and FOR my best friend who is 100% FULLY disabled, can't walk at all, and needs surgury in order to ever walk again. He can not even seem to get on state assistance or help and we have now been trying for months! I have been taking care of him for the last 5 years. I love my friend dearly, and all I am trying to do is provide a home for my friend who can not take care of himself, as well as keep a roof over our heads and feed us. But sadly I am struggling. Finally after over 500 resumes sent out, and over 100 interviews, I am finally doing temp work and I think I am about to land this job here shortly. The reason no one has hired me so far has NOTHING to do with my age, or how I work, or my qualifications, as I am OVER qualified for 95% of these jobs I interview for. It is the fact that I am gay and end up not getting the job. It is clearly the case when many of these companies first do a phone interview with me for nearly an hour, tell me to come because they are so sure they want to hire me, then they see me, and I look like a NORMAL guy nothing wrong with me, but just because I sound a little gay and act a tiny bit on the feminine side, since I am gay.....they end up not hiring me...... This is HORRIBLE and it makes me so sad and feel pathetic I just can not help it but to break down and cry.....I try so hard in life to just live my life, WORK, and provide for my disabled friend, who is not even gay and is simply my friend who has been there for me my entire life, I just feel like giving up....it seems as if there is no hope for me. If it wasn't for my parents who are struggling themselves, I would be out on the streets. I do not want to take a dime from them, but I have no choice.... PLEASE HELP AMERICA!!! What is wrong with you?!??! All I want to do is work.....
Hey 10:36. Its not the presidents fault your gay and can't deal with your own reality. Maybe your obvious anger and language is the real problem. I don't care about your sexual orientation, so why do you feel the need to tell everybody? I am sure if you weren't worried about it, nobody else would be either. I hope you find work.
Got a call from my bank today informing me that my account has been overdrawn in the amount of $507 (including bank fees of course) for the past 2 months and my time is up since they can only keep it overdrawn for 60 days. This happened because I had paid my car insurance and cable bill as I had expected my unemployment check to be deposited which didn't happen since it was cut off and the bank paid for these items and is looking to be reimbursed. I explained to the bank that our government does not take care of working people like it does the banks. So now if I get a job that has direct deposit I won't have a bank to make a deposit.
I've been asked to re-post this: Tax Return Money! Tax Season is upon us and all of are waiting for the EUC to pass (and GOD willing it will) and need as much tax return money to survive! What I was surprised about was that the National Unemployment Benefits Office and the local Offices (state and government offices that are suppose to help us) did not tell me about this. I accidentally came across this and want to share it with you! Within the IRS is a department called: TAX PAYER ADVOCACY. Go to the IRS website and search it! They fight for the tax payer to get the most tax return money when they have suffered financial hardships (and we have)! *****Note: You can't have already filed your taxes! Even though you can use a tax preparer like Turbo Tax etc, you can't have your tax returns electronically filed or filed by them! The Tax Payer Advocacy has to intercept your tax return, so YOU have to send it to them along with other paperwork for them to plead your case! Here is what you do: 1). Go to the IRS website and search the TAX PAYER ADVOCACY. Print and fill out the form. 2). Within 24-48 hours they will contact you and give you your local office contact numbers. You will be given a personal case worker (you will have their name, and direct extension phone number). 3). The case worker (advocate) will tell you what paperwork they need you to fax them. Send everything they need ASAP (Remember you can use your local unemployment office to fax paperwork, and make copies for free)! Things they will need: The tax Payer Advocacy form from IRS website, your completed tax return, proof of all your bills, shut-off notices, disconnection notices, eviction notices, letter showing discontinued employment, and a voided check (for direct deposit). This may seem like a lot of work but it's worth it! The reason the case worker needs all of this because they are fighting the IRS for you! They have to plead your case to 2-separate offices before it's approved! This program is for people that OWE the IRS money, but because of their dire financial issues, need their ENTIRE tax return money. Remember, this won't delete the tax obligation owed to the IRS, but it postpones it till next year! Stay in touch with your case worker! Call them every couple of days (don't bug them too much), be nice and appreciated! My case worker told me he had about 100 clients at any given time! They understand you need the money ASAP! I had my tax return money automatically deposited in 2 weeks! It was a great experience! GOD Bless!
This is in reply to people getting overdrawn at their banks and accounts closed. Don't worry! You can open another bank account anywhere for about a $25 deposit! Personally, I love Wells Fargo! They have no service fees if you make a minimum of ATM/withdraws! They have great customer service, have a great smart phone app and let you take photos of your deposits and send to them. Remember, that we will all have to do all the qualifying paperwork all over again because so much time has passed with Senate and bill. Remember how you had to get approved for your initial unemploment? That has to be repeated (and yes, wait 4-6 weeks to get first check). Great huh? Well, anyway, you can give them your new account information then (so have this done beforehand)!
I know to most it seems like euc is just a hand out but, its not. We got it because we are workers. I was employed for 3 years at the same company and lost my job through no fault of my own. I asked to be made part time so i could be home more to take care of my disabled wife and infant son as i could not afford to hire help. When they realized i could no longer be at their disposal 24/7 like i was, my manager told me that i need not pu family before my top priority (my job). I knew i would be losing hours and money but it was a choice i had to make. Three days later i entered work to find that i had been removed from the schedule. When asked why the manager had nothing to say. Half way through my shift i was called into the office and was terminated for "productivity". I have now been unemployed for 12 months and only got called for one interview. The job was a commission paid job selling insurance over the phone. I am a 26 year old labor worker from ohio. What am i supposed to do with that? I am young, healthy and have a beautiful resume. If the economy is looking up and the need for euc is gone. Why cant i find a job. I am thousands of dollars behind and eating ramen noodles IF i eat. What did my family and i do to deserve this. What did any of us WORKERS do to deserve this? And how can a government meant to lead us to success leave us out in the cold like this. To those that are trying thank you. And to those in the cold, stay strong
