Emergency Unemployment Benefits Are Not Forgotten

As politicians have shifted their focus to a discussion of minimum wage this spring, addressing the December expiration of emergency unemployment benefits, retroactively, appeared increasingly difficult. However, the Senate now appears ready to raise the issue, again, nearly two months after the emergency benefits expired.

The number of Americans, who have been cut off from unemployment insurance due to congressional inaction, will swell to just under 2 million people as February draws to a close. Approximately 1.3 million Americans were abruptly cut off from the program on Dec. 28, 2013, and the number denied benefits will continue to grow without congressional action. More than $3 billion in unemployment checks has not been distributed to unemployed workers as a result of the program‘s expiration.

The cut in unemployment compensation will continue to exacerbate shortages at food banks, elevate mortgage delinquency rates, and inhibit the ability of job-seekers to continue their search, if no action is taken.

Payroll employment, the labor market participation rate, and long-term unemployment have still not returned to pre-recession levels, and robust job growth in the near term appears unlikely. For these reasons, efforts to extend emergency unemployment compensation have attracted bipartisan support, especially among conservatives in states still plagued with high unemployment. Nonetheless, only four Republican Senators supported moving forward with the proposal in a procedural vote in early February.

Extending emergency unemployment benefits is a vital piece of unfinished business for this Congress, and it is perhaps the only vehicle of its kind that could provide relief to job-seekers trying to make it in a tough market. An extension of the emergency unemployment compensation program (EUC) should continue to be pursed for the same reasons the minimum wage should be increased-- the economy is not working for the average American. We can, and should, help low-wage job workers, those working part-time for economic reasons, and unemployed job seekers.

For a breakdown of ongoing state-by-state impacts, the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities has produced a concise chart that extends through December 2014 here.

Hey Tired in Texas. You mentioned you posted something last night about getting money from your tax return even if you owe money to the IRS. Repost it. Its stupid that this website lets you see like 5 posts per page, then you gotta click next page, next page, exc. Lame! Wake up Center for Effective Government and let us see all the comments on one page! I owe money to the IRS and when I file, isn't the IRS just gonna scoop it up? I need cash anyway I can get it. Let me know. Thanks
Every time I see John Boehner or Mitch Mconnell o B get sock to my stomach. I hate the Republicans with a passion. They are doing this cap because the want to make Obama look bad. AND THEY'RE doing it at our expense.
I have lost faith in Congress and am depressed. I was part of a layoff (my x employer streamlined so they could make more $$ making other workers do more jobs even when they made lots of profit). I am 60 years old no company wants to hire me despite countless application's the jobs are not there. Next stop the food bank and food stamps. I will not be voting for any congress men or women that hold that office currently.
They are just hoping this all blows over obviously they have no intention of passing it going on month 3 tomorrow.
Vote them out republicans tea party democrats they are all voting against us we are 2 million strong if we each have 4 people who feel the same way than we are 5 million strong vote them out at election time dont forget what they are doing dems and reps want to downsize euc next election we can down size them all reid bye bye reed bye bye bohner bye bye mcconnel bye bye all of you we arent fooled by its the other partys fault crap no more we arent blind nor are we stupid nor will we forget tea party bye bye all of you you have set ur own demise in motion it wont be a dem or rep or tea party election itll be americans making you unemployed. Yes you senators and house members
It is a shame that our congress doesn't care about the millions of Americans suffering because they refuse to extend emergency unemployment benefits. A shame that our president won't force the issue, as he does so many things. Let's vote them all out of office.
Think about it. They passed it 4 different times while Bush was in office no if ands or buts about it. No attachments or amendments or pay fors. Go and check out the votes...it was like 80-20 everytime they passed it.waaay over the 60 needed. If there was a republican president in office it would've never expired back in December.
A few days after the extension was cut off the hot water tank in my condo broke. I do not have $350 to buy a new one since I have zero income and I have been living WITHOUT HOT WATER FOR ALMOST 2 MONTHS.
Honestly the way we are living without food and basic necessities are we living in America or some third world nation
