Emergency Unemployment Benefits Are Not Forgotten

As politicians have shifted their focus to a discussion of minimum wage this spring, addressing the December expiration of emergency unemployment benefits, retroactively, appeared increasingly difficult. However, the Senate now appears ready to raise the issue, again, nearly two months after the emergency benefits expired.

The number of Americans, who have been cut off from unemployment insurance due to congressional inaction, will swell to just under 2 million people as February draws to a close. Approximately 1.3 million Americans were abruptly cut off from the program on Dec. 28, 2013, and the number denied benefits will continue to grow without congressional action. More than $3 billion in unemployment checks has not been distributed to unemployed workers as a result of the program‘s expiration.

The cut in unemployment compensation will continue to exacerbate shortages at food banks, elevate mortgage delinquency rates, and inhibit the ability of job-seekers to continue their search, if no action is taken.

Payroll employment, the labor market participation rate, and long-term unemployment have still not returned to pre-recession levels, and robust job growth in the near term appears unlikely. For these reasons, efforts to extend emergency unemployment compensation have attracted bipartisan support, especially among conservatives in states still plagued with high unemployment. Nonetheless, only four Republican Senators supported moving forward with the proposal in a procedural vote in early February.

Extending emergency unemployment benefits is a vital piece of unfinished business for this Congress, and it is perhaps the only vehicle of its kind that could provide relief to job-seekers trying to make it in a tough market. An extension of the emergency unemployment compensation program (EUC) should continue to be pursed for the same reasons the minimum wage should be increased-- the economy is not working for the average American. We can, and should, help low-wage job workers, those working part-time for economic reasons, and unemployed job seekers.

For a breakdown of ongoing state-by-state impacts, the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities has produced a concise chart that extends through December 2014 here.

WORKED SO MANY YEARS I PAID MY TAXES WITH NO COMPLAINS. FIRST TIME ON UNEMPLOYMENT DEC 2013 MADE MY 6TH MONTH UNEMPLOYED WITH MANY ATTEMPTS TO GET A JOB.WELL THESE LAST TWO MONTHS I SOLD EVERYTHING I HAD TO SURVIVE AND FEED MY SON , I NOW HAVE NO CAR NO GOLD EMPTY FRIDGE AND A CRYING SON BECAUSE I NO LONGER CAN KEEP HIM HAPPY . WHAT A SHAME I SHED TEARS WRITING THIS . HOPE THIS REACHES SOMEWHERE !
I'm in the same boat thats sinking fast. My car insurance is no longer valid which doesn't really matter cause the tags on my car are now expired. Have eviction court next week. Read the newspaper today and apparently voting on woodlands is more important than Americans who can no longer pay their bills because of the governments inability to worry about their own people.
Republicans and democrats are using the unemployed as pawns fortheir own political benefit. If there were 10 million people waiting for unemployment benefits extension to be paid this would have already happened. Instead of criticizing republicans for not passing extension start calling Hatry Reid's office and all d emocractic senators and tell them you want this bill passed now and lets see what happens.
I'm about to lose my benefits in a week. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and can't afford to pay for my Cobra anymore. It's rent or health insurance. I looked into The Health Care Network (Obama care) Basically I would have to pay for insurance that covers nothing. It's like a bandaid on a head wound. Perfect for a health person with a few hundred bucks to throw away per month. My medication is $6000 per month without insurance (why they cost that much is a whole other issue) I have no savings left. Without my meds I can't even get out of bed because of my pain. Soon I might not have anywhere to lay my head. I send out resumes daily. I spend between 4-8 hrs. per day looking at the same job listings. I've been on 8 interviews and I never get the job. I have too much experience so an employer would rather offer the job to someone willing to work for less. I even offered to work for $8 less per hour with no benefits and still didn't get the job. I don't know what employers want? I lost my job due to lack of business. I worked for the same company for 13 years. There profits were down. They terminated me and offered more hours to the newest part time employee at 1/2 my rate of pay. I feel I was punished for my loyalty and dedication. It's insourcing within a company. Now I'm unemployed and sick. I can't get any help. I looked into Medicaid and was told I don't qualify because I don't have a child. Really!? I bet there are people who have children to just the hope of qualifying for help. If I apply for Disability I would be waiting for 2 years, but also need to be under doctors care and not be working. How much red tape can the government put in my way of survival? I don't have family to live off. The country is gone to hell. I've worked since I was 15 and never been on the verge of homelessness. I've never collected unemployment until now. We the people bailed out big banks and other countries, but when WE THE PEOPLE need a bailout we get F***ED! There should be no question or debate about it. It's all a political game to falsify the unemployment numbers for the next election. If your not collecting your not counted. On top of it all they are cutting food stamps. Really? They are literally taking food from American children's mouths and supporting other countries who probably hate us. The government throws away money into black holes and it's we who pay one way or the other. It's so frustrating to hear republicans call the unemployed lazy. Most them would crumble to bits if they had to walk a minute in our shoes. Time for them to pull there heads out of their asses and do what's right. Extend benefits and create jobs. For every job available there is 3 candidates so says the media. Well my last interview there were 127 people who applied. Can't get off my ass if there is no where to go!
It is appalling that a bill extending EUC cannot be agreed upon in the Senate and "fast tracked" to the President for signature. I believe that letting EUC expire in December for so many displaced Americans is not only wrong, it is just plain negligent. I find it absolutely amazing that the Senate and the House cannot come to terms and find common ground to resolve this growing issue. A staggering amount of displaced Americans, 1.6 million and growing by 70,000 daily, are now faced with defaulting on mortgages, car loans, etc. Vehicles are being re-possessed, people cannot put food on their tables to feed themselves or their CHILDREN. In the midst of one the coldest and snowiest winters in years, this in unconscionable. People are struggling to pay heating costs and put fuel in their vehicles or take public transportation. Many of these very same people, especially in the South, Northwest and Northeast, have faced crippling storms with major long term power outages. The outlook doesn't look any better for those in the South and Northeast as another major storm is heading their way. These storms not only affect the unemployed, but the employer / businesses as well. Hiring gets put on the back-burner as businesses focus on getting up and running after the storm. Every storm can cause a delay of at least a week in the hiring process. John Boehner and his fellow Republicans opposed the latest plan, yet offered no plan of their own. What Congress fails to realize is that even if the extension were to be signed by the President TODAY, it would still take approximately 2 weeks for the states to process claims and issue checks. When the extension is finally executed, the Republicans will be all full of themselves, patting themselves on the back and telling the displaced American worker how much THEY helped. Then they will have the audacity to ask those very same displaced workers for their votes. John Boehner and this Congress are well on their way to solidifying their legacy as THE ABSOLUTE WORST CONGRESS IN U.S. HISTORY! A distinct honor indeed. The Republican stance is to create jobs and reduce / cut off social programs. For instance Rep. James Inhofe (R, OK) had this to say: "We can get Americans back to work and our economy booming again, but this is not achieved by Washington turning a temporary federal benefit into another welfare program." I'm all for creating new jobs. I challenge Rep. Inhofe and his Republican colleagues to pass a bill that would create jobs for the 1.7 million workers that lost EUC, have it signed by the President, have the unemployed in a job receiving paychecks in a week. The Republicans have countered that EUC has been extended 11 times. Why has it taken until the 12th time for them to all of a sudden hold it hostage for job creation? Why wasn't it addressed during the previous 11 extensions? I am also very disheartened about the silence coming from the House on this issue. Outside of John Boehner continuing to beat the drum about the Affordable Care Act, nothing but crickets. The Affordable Care Act is law now. Unless the Republicans have a viable alternative, give it a rest. That horse is already out of the barn. Boehner is doing nothing but obstructing and has insinuated that even if EUC passes in the Senate, it will get stalled in the House. Where are the voices of all the Democrats in the House supporting the bill to extend EUC? More time is being spent on conniving ways to maintain their majority than actually doing something constructive for the people that sent you there. I would guess that maintain a Republican majority will be more difficult as time goes by. The fact that this Congress has such a low approval rating, and dropping, will make it more challenging for Republicans and Tea Party candidates in states races to win. I WOULD ISSUE THIS REMINDER TO THE REPUBLICANS / TEA PARTY: THE VERY SAME "LAZY, FREELOADING" UNEMPLOYED AMERICANS THAT YOU ARE NEGLECTING, IGNORING AND INSULTING ARE THE ONES THAT VOTED YOU INTO OFFICE. THEY CAN AND WILL VOTE YOU OUT. HOPEFULLY SOONER THAN LATER. I would urge the Dems in the House to raise your voices and join your Senate colleagues. I would urge the Republicans to see the damage and pain they are inflicting on their constituents and support EUC. I urge BOTH PARTIES to reach across the aisle, find common ground and get this bill done and on the Presidents desk immediately. I would also urge ALL the displaced American workers to unite and raise your voices to a point where it cannot be ignored. THE FOLLOWING IS THE REPUBLICANS "PLEDGE TO AMERICA" Americans need no reminder that the challenges we face are enormous. Our economy has declined and our debt has mushroomed with the loss of millions of jobs. The social fabric that binds us as citizens, families and communities is unraveling. Voices in and out of government whisper that our standing as the world’s leader of democracy and economic growth is ending. The American people do not accept these counsels of timidity, failure, and despair. In town halls and on public squares, in every corner of this country, people have gathered and spoken out – in small groups and larger crowds, through phone calls and in letters, through websites and new technologies. Legislators in Washington have imposed an agenda that doesn’t reflect the priorities of the people. What’s worse, the most important decisions are made behind closed doors, where a flurry of backroom deals has supplanted the will of the people. It's time to do away with the old agendas: that much is clear. It's not enough, however, to swap out one set of leaders for another. Structure dictates behavior, so we have drafted this blueprint on a process of listening to the American people and fielding their concerns and ideas for turning things around. The American people have humbled us. They have reminded us that the privilege to serve is temporary. Hard work and tough decisions will be required of the 112th Congress. No longer can we fall short. No longer can we kick the can down the road. In November, the people voted to end business as usual, and thus, we begin carrying out their instructions. This is our guidebook as we move forward. This is our Pledge to America. OBVIOUSLY THEY HAVE NO INTENTION OF HONORING THEIR OWN PLEDGE!!
You know this is so sad dont make no sense. Its like they send money to all these other countries when there in a crisis. Now were in crisis and can't get n help from any were. I have kids every need else has kids we can't pay our bills or buy food. Can't look for work. They don't care because there stable and already set so they don't care what were going thru. I have lost my apartment and used up my 401K. I have applied for jobs which I was qualified, had interviews but due to being unemployed for over six months did not get any position. I even applied for housekeeping and got a rejection stating I was not qualified. I been cleaning since the age of 9! I was asked how old I was in a phone inquiry about a job. I am over 50 and being discriminated against. This needs to stop and be determined on job experience.
Is Johnny Bonner a drunk? I wonder what other congress members are on . You cannot reason with people like those in congress they are not qualify to do the job that is the reason we do not understand why they will not extend unemployment.
